Hearing Aids Improve Quality of Life
A first-of-its kind study has determined that hearing aids have a positive impact on quality of life for older Americans. It strongly supports the fact that hearing instruments make a positive difference in the lives of hearing impaired individuals over the age of 50.
Commissioned by the National Council on the Aging (NCOA) and the Hearing Industries Association, the study determined that untreated hearing loss in older people can lead to a variety of emotional maladies. People not using hearing aids experienced depression, paranoia, anxiety, anger, frustration, insecurity and social isolation.
Hearing aid users, on the other hand, reported higher levels of social interaction, better family relationships, more emotional stability and better overall health. They were significantly less prone to emotional problems.
"This debunks the myth that untreated hearing loss in older people is a harmless condition," said James Firman, NCOA president and CEO.
This national survey is the largest of its type ever undertaken, reaching more than 2,300 people with hearing impairment ranging from mild to severe. Researchers also interviewed nearly 2,100 family members and friends--the first study to include this population. Hearing aid users and their loved ones consistently reported more benefit from hearing aids on every quality of life measurement.
Ronald C. Perry, president of Preferred Hearing Solutions in Hemet and Temecula CA, says the study's findings reflect what he sees in his hearing health practice every day. "There is simply no question that hearing aids improve the attitude and general well-being of those experiencing hearing loss, and their families, who might otherwise be missing some of the best times of their lives."
